Hand Spinning

Hand spinning is the art of twisting fibres into yarn using tools like spinning wheels or drop spindles. This craft has been practiced for thousands of years, dating back to ancient civilizations. Drop spindles were the original method of spinning ‘on the go’ & date back 7000 years.

Despite the advent of mechanized spinning during the Industrial Revolution, hand spinning remains a popular hobby today. There are many differing sizes & styles of spinning wheels available. Hand spinning on a wheel is well suited to alpaca fleece as it can be spun in the green without washing. Enthusiasts enjoy the meditative process & the ability to create unique, often custom yarns for knitting, crochet & even weaving. However a single fleece can take many hours to hand spin & ply.
