Accommodation
Alpacas are resilient and can live outside all year round as long as they have adequate shelter and nutrition.
Housing
- A shelter must be large enough for all alpacas in the field.
- Larger buildings may benefit from internal penning and should have adequate ventilation, feeding area and water supply if they are in regular use.
- Catch pens can be very useful for routine husbandry

Pasture
- Adequate grazing should be provided for the number of animals kept.
- The stocking rate of alpacas depends upon the amount of grass, the quality, and the frequency and intensity of grazing. Typically, this is 4 to 6 alpacas per acre. (link to video)
- Daily poo picking is advisable (hyperlink to parasite control)
- Paddocks should be checked for toxic plants and flowers. Toxic plant leaflet can be downloaded here.

Fencing
- Four-foot sheep fencing using stock netting is usually suitable for alpacas.
- Barbed wire should be removed.
- Electric fencing is best avoided.
Check your fences regularly to make sure they are safe and secure.
