Accommodation

Housing

  • A shelter must be large enough for all alpacas in the field.
  • Larger buildings may benefit from internal penning and should have adequate ventilation, feeding area and water supply if they are in regular use.
  • Catch pens can be very useful for routine husbandry

Pasture

  • Adequate grazing should be provided for the number of animals kept.
  • The stocking rate of alpacas depends upon the amount of grass, the quality, and the frequency and intensity of grazing.  Typically, this is 4 to 6 alpacas per acre. (link to video)
  • Daily poo picking is advisable (hyperlink to parasite control)
  • Paddocks should be checked for toxic plants and flowers. Toxic plant leaflet can be downloaded here.

Fencing

  • Four-foot sheep fencing using stock netting is usually suitable for alpacas.
  • Barbed wire should be removed.
  • Electric fencing is best avoided.

Check your fences regularly to make sure they are safe and secure.
