Alpacas can give birth annually and are induced ovulators
- Average gestation is 345 days although it can vary from 330 to 370 days.
- Alpacas usually give birth in daylight hours.
- Alpacas are induced ovulators which means the egg is released during the act of mating.
- Alpacas mate sitting down
- Females may be ready to be mated when they have reached at least 60 per cent of the weight of their mother and not usually before 14 months old.
- A female should be in a fit condition to return to a male from 10-14 days post-partum.
- Some males are able to breed from about nine months of age but most males are not fertile until they are 2-3 years old.
