The first few hours of a cria’s life are crucial to a healthy outcome
- As soon as possible after birth the naval should be sprayed or dipped with an antibacterial.
- Generally, cria should be on their feet and attempting to feed within 2 hours of birth.
- Make sure the cria gets adequate colostrum from its dam. It is advisable to have plasma from your own herd available.
- Check the placenta is complete (see birthing fact sheet below)
- Hypothermia in cold or wet weather can be fatal to young and newborn cria, ensure you check their temperature and use a coat if necessary.
- Cria should be weighed regularly to ensure they are gaining weight.
- Cria should be weaned at around six months of age.
